In the real world no-one will ever ask you what a clause is! However, when you speak and write they will find your language unusual if you don't use a variety clauses. Therefore understanding what clauses are gives you the tools to correctly make different types of sentences.

Don't get confused a phrase with a clause.. A phrase is simply a group of words e.g. under the tree. However, a clause is a group of related words that contains both a subject and verb.
